Mountain High with Mandela

One of the highlights of my recent commission in the Drakensberg mountain region of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa was a visit to the new monument by artist Marco Cianfanelli celebrating Nelson Mandela, erected in August last year at the sight where he was captured 50 years before.

Formed of 50 tall steel columns, the powerful sculpture ‘comes together’ only when you stand at one specific spot 35 metres away…for me it was a surreal and emotional moment when Mandela’s three dimensional face appeared in profile against the landscape beyond. Don’t miss it if you visit this beautiful region, also noteable for its stunning Drakensberg mountain landscapes and delicious food.

The article ‘Mountain High’ is out now in the January issue of Food and Travel magazine. Photographs by Sarah Coghill and text by Marc Millon.
